Rattle was mentioned. Wrap a small rubber band around the tip. Eliminates the rattle, no effect on function. Release studs useless. Just twist sword in casing and it will release.
Well made. Sharp. I have not experienced rattling with normal use. If I shake it I can hear something inside. Do not expect to draw this cane by pressing the studs. If I reinsert the blade with the studs between holes there is more than enough friction to make it secure. Otherwise some careful shaving with crocus cloth might lower the studs enough to make it easier to draw with the studs in the holes, or easier to drag with the studs between the holes. Altogether a fine piece.
Very fast for delivery, out of the box looks great sword withdrew easy very sharp. Love it making another purchase for my brother inlaw.
Easy to draw and came razor sharp. The only issue that i have is that when it is used as a cane it rattles a lot but other than that minor issue very pleased with purchase.
Good quality, well built, and easy to draw the sword, just rotate the head and it comes out easily.
From the box, it came out better than I expected with the low price. Sadly the handle is not wooden but feels sturdy none the less. The blade itself is also very stable so far, a bit bendy and thin compared to my expectation. Overall great for the price and would buy as a cheap gift for a friend as well.
Exactly as imagined. Difficult to remove sword until I used a file to file off the metal burs inside, around the release buttons - now works perfect, very cool.
I like the cane very much. I really use it as a cane and like that there is protection at my finger tips. But, the two release buttons do not work well. I could never release it it a moment of need. It would take a few seconds to accomplish and sometimes that is to long to wait.
...True, but every so often you get something thats value meets or exceeds its price. I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled this item from the package. I mean you can scarcely get out of a fast food restaurant these days for less than a $20. I wanted a long blade 22+ inches because let's face it, if I ever pulled this on someone it would be a defensive last resort, and as such. someone is going home missing a hand. and this weapon is sharp and sturdy enough to hack it. Rattled a bit in the sheath but 2mins and a piece of foam rubber, and it was the real deal. Money well spent. I intend to upgrade and I will gladly shop here again. Well done BUDK, and thanks!
Just received my Black wood traveler and it surpasses my expectations. The wooden ball appears secure and the blade is surprisingly sharp. Additionally, I received my cane in 6 days!!! Worth much more than priced. Thank you Bud K. Y'all knocked it out of the park!!!
I just got cane today and cannot believe how nice it is. Way better than I expected for the price. Like someone posted before, any problems they had in the past have been fixed. I think I'll buy some for Christmas presents. Too bad we live in such a dangerous world. At least this cane gives you a fighting chance. I love it!
I read the reviews here, and the three year old ones on BUDK, and I was expecting a DIY cane project. I was pleasantly surprised when I got my cane, the ball was on tightly, the blade was sharp enough that it only took a few passes with a sharpener to get it where I wanted it. The rubber foot so far has stood up to three days of walking. I put some foam rubber in the bottom and the blade doesn't rattle now. I would encourage people to buy this cane now, I think they learned from the bad reviews and made a better product, or better quality control.
When I received these items as a bogo, the Pommel came out of both canes, glued them back together. At first test swing against an aloe plant leaf, the ball bearings that hold the blade into the scabbard popped out and the whole blade shot out of its handle onto the ground. Definitely something I feel strongly about defending myself with. I replaced the blade back into the handle and drilled a hole and screwed it in, it wont come out now. However I cant find the ball bearings anywhere. Oh well, for 10 bucks its a do it yourself item, but I still like it.
I cannot see how the people who make this would allow it to leave their factory like this. The wooden ball that you hold onto does not fit into the cane. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Out of the box this is usable as a cane. Perhaps "sword stick that if you have some glue, wood filler, and some time you can make into a cane" would be a better name.
i've had this sword cane for some time now(17 months) and thought i'd give my review on it. first, the wooden knob came off right out of the box...not a major problem there, a small strip of nylon strap and a few light taps put that right quickly. second, it came semi sharp..only cut if you used a lot of force...again not a major problem, matter of fact i'd rather it came dull for safety reasons. third, it took a bit of use to get things to work as advertised..meaning it was a bit hard to get apart and back together...that wasn't to much of a problem either...a little twisting as you draw the sword helped that problem out very well. fourth, the point may need a bit of work with a file if your look for a piercing defense type weapon, if you know how to use tools correctly then that isn't going to be a problem either. fifth, the blade does rattle a bit when you walk with it...a piece of an old water hose(about 20 inches) worked wonders for that problem just had to work it in slowly and get it far enough in to not hinder the sword being put back in! all in all, a very nice little cane sword...after all, it is an SS blade and a little thin so it will flex a bit...holds a fair edge but again it is SS and that does not hold an edge for long...length of the cane was just right for me. simple clean look, not a one of a kind thing but really nice...my first use for this was taking it to a wedding as part of my steampunk outfit...big hit there! as long as you know what your getting you should have no problems with this cane...it's a cane first and foremost...this is NOT a "hack and slash" sword! if that's what you expect from this then you need something else...period! i'm 65 years old and know what i need and am looking for...for the price you can't beat this sword cane...just understand what your working with and go from there. i'd recommend this for anyone.
I have been making Damascus blades, swords, and specialty items for 34 years. Other than the blade being dull(which is common by many knifesmiths) it's a great cane sword for the money. Highly recommend to customers that don't expect a $1000 blade for $30 dollars. Common sense people can make any touch up needed
As again the wood head will fall off or rub the paint away , the rubber end will break off or out, but with a lot of love and care you can build this into a lovely tool, just don't use it as a golf club, darn little brothers
I don't know what the negative reviews are about. Yes, it came dull, but good quality. The price is extremely good for what you get. I have a similar one and paid five times what this one cost. Buy it, if yours needs some fix up, should be way easy. Mine came solid and intact. sharpens up well, good balance. Best Buy!
Received my a few weeks ago, the ball end was of but some locktite glue fixed it.The Blade and overall construction is well done and balanced, very impressed.
A friend and I recently purchased a brace of these, and they arrived about a week ago. We had perused the mixed reviews, but were prepared to gamble anyway as we are both men with decent shop/repair skills and felt competent to fix any flaws that the canes might arrive with. I cannot stress how pleasantly surprised we were when our canes arrived. Even when sheathed the cane is weighty and sturdy enough to be used as quite an effective bludgeon. Yes, the blade does rattle a bit when sheathed but this is easily fixed by padding or shimming the inside body of the cane itself. The blade itself arrives decently edged (nothing a few passes with a whetstone won't improve) with a nice tanto point and could serve as a formidable stabbing weapon right out of the box. The blade is also made out of fine, flexible steel- my friend is a professionally trained fencer and he could not put this blade down! It sits well in the hand and is comfortable and easy to wield. The head of the cane is a turned wooden ball with had come loose during shipping, but that was nothing a dab of epoxy couldn't fix. The locking mechanism is simple, but effective. You'd have to work very hard indeed to get this to come loose accidentally. I made a point of lubricating the inside of the lock area as a precaution, and now it draws smoothly and fluidly. Overall I cannot recommend this cane highly enough. If you are in the market for a fine blade that can be easily improved, this is for you. It exudes old-world "black tie" charm while also giving the wielder an added sense of security and debonair flair. Simply put, if you don't mind a few minutes of elbow grease this cane cannot be beat. BUDK does it again!
I opened my Black traveler sword cane 10 min ago and I am STUNNED at the high quality. After reading the reviews, I figured it was a crapshoot, about 1/2 love it and about 1/2 hate it. Well, I don't know what happened, either the quality has gone up hundreds of % OR I got VERY lucky. Folks spoke of rattles (my $189 Cold Steel rattles, but thanks to BUDK *PLUS* helpful reviewers, I know I can put in some wool or make a tube out of cardboard and line it). It has a very short tang as does my old model Cold Steel, but since the grip shank is filled with polymer (like both Cold Steel swords) 2 pins made from finishing nails will retain the blade well for thrusts and slashing attacks. The blade is "bendy" - a rapier blade is *supposed* to bend; if it parries a heavier sword it won't break, indeed all swords bend, please watch the Cold Steel video (on the website) that shows their Rapier sword cane bowing 8 or 9 inches before effortlessly penetrating a big, wet sea-grass mat.The sword that was delivered to me is heavy enough to use as a bludgeon, and the cane body is sturdy enough to use as a weak hand strike/parry tool, my wooden cane head (knob) is glued on fine but so many folks had trouble in transit or falling off in a short time I whacked it against my rug 4 times HARD and it seems OK, just in case, my epoxy awaits. On the down side; It IS dull, but I have used a professional knife sharpening service in the past and I watched as they used a big belt sander-like a band saw, but a handheld >belt< sander will work-it takes only 30 - 45 seconds to sharpen the BACK of a knife so it'll work fine on this blade. The ad copy needs updating for sure, but for 10 or 20 bucks I'm way fine with this cane and sword, it needs a little work but I customize everything I get anyway. OH! The dual detents that you twist to release the blade are the BEST lock I have ever found on a sword cane, and I have all the Cold Steels plus other high quality swords and canes. BUDK -- GREAT JOB!!!
I have used this as my cane for 2 months now, and it is great for a cane, as I am 6'1" and find most canes a bit short. And the metal housing is a decent club/staff. Foam in the bottom for the rattle and a better foot ($1), and a nicer edge and it has been great. And yes, the blade is thin. But I have gone through 1" stalks with it, and no issues. The blade is for emergency self defense. For the money, this is a great item.
What a bargain. I am a steel worker by trade and although this cane sword is not the best on the market; it is exceptionally well made for the price. The wooden handle will need to be epoxied in but that is no biggie.
Let me start off by saying for the price you can not get a better sword cane. I’ve had a look at many companies and many different swords in the same price range and this one beets them all….the overall blade length was a number one pick for this sword. It is 3 to 4 inches longer than most for the same price. It’s a sturdy usable cane and the blade does not rattle in the sheath like most other ones…..i highly recommend this sword cane. Only down to this sword is the unsharpened blade, but with a little work you can have it razor sharp . on a scale form 1 to 10 for the price i would give it a 9.5
man this sword is in one word AMAZING!!! the blade is similar in weight to a rapier. only this sword has a piercing tanto point. rattles a little inside of the cane end. great for walking support. and is a excellent self defense piece is not just a wall hanger. I my self have zero regrets about ordering this sword cane except for the fact that it does not come very sharp but is a easy fix. I now have mine next to razor sharp. all in all a excellent buy seeing as this was my first sword cane. would be great for an elderly man or a young traveler or an exile looking for a great self defense piece. as it says in the wolf-man novel from on exile to another.
It is very good the only problem is with the ball it came loose and had to glue it back other than that it is perfect
I liked it overall with the only disappointment being the sheath. The blade just hangs in it bouncing around dulling it.
I find myself sitting here at the house holding this cane in my arm like I'm some D&^'n general or something barking orders at the kids lol. On a serious note its a lightweight cane that does the job. Got this one as a gift from a family member. like the twist and release to engage the blade. I do tend to like things more as being a optimist, but if it is a sub par product I don't have issue with speaking rather candid on quality issues... I just try to keep it real like some people expect the world for a $20 item! I mean C'mon sometimes you get a real winner for a bargain price but one always needs to be subjective depending on value vs. price vs. reality that in most cases you really do get what you pay for :)
good cane but the blade inide came dull, the most dull ive ever seen its going to take forever to sharpen
In upon receiving the cane, it came to my notice that the two buttons that are supposed to be squeezed in order to release the blade, do not need to be squeezed. On the instructions of the cane it says to twist the handle and pull the sword from the cane shaft. The blade rattles in the shaft but if use the cane just right, when walking with it the sword does not rattle. The blade is not sharp but can be fixed if desired. The handle and the shaft are very strong and it made me think that if this was an ordinary cane, it could be used as a club. And will do some damage if used as a club. When I swing the sword, the blade barely starts to come out of the handle (by about only 1/16 of an inch) and I have to push the blade back into the hilt. Every time I put the blade back into the shaft, the blade scratches the inside of the shaft and the next time I pull it out there is a little bit of black stuff on the blade. But overall the cane is strong and durable, love the cane and is a great piece for display or for self-defense. Even though the buttons do not need to be squeezed, they do keep the blade in the shaft and will keep the blade from falling out.
Solid construction with a longer blade when compared with others I have purchased. The cane portion itself is metal making it an effective bludgeon.
I ordered this to make myself feel safe on my daily commute as it is through a bad part of town and muggings are a thing to be worried about. I picked this one because most of the sword canes on here seem more to be dagger canes with very short blades. This one is a good length and will be reasonably sharp with a bit of work (I wouldn't expect Excalibur) but all in all I'm very happy with the blade. The cane itself is alight. I'm ordering a replacement rubber stopper because this one has shredded after a single day walking and the black ball needs to be glued on, but it is an inconspicuos and good sword cane for a great price too!
Had one for a short time, then gave it to my father. The old neighbourhood is not what it used to be, and many seniors in the area have taken to carrying broom handles and even ski poles when they go out. Giving dad this just looked better. Due to the size of the blade, it is heavy. It's strong, and sturdy enough to use as a day to day service cane, the only problem being the ball on top came off, so dad popped it back on and put a screw into it to keep it from coming off again. He has had to use it for defense... when deer came through the fence and he needed to scare them away from mom's chihuahua :) If you do, by some crazy action movie scenario, ever have to fight with this thing, the sword comes dull, but will take an edge if you know how. But even un-sharpened it's an excellent whacker, and the body is a great club too. So, yeah, if some magic genie grants your wish and you need to defend yourself and some lovely companion, you can double up, with the sword in one hand and the body in the other.
love the look, love the feel. When it showed up, I had to re-glue the ball end back into the handle. Besides that, overall great product!
Great little sword sword cane. Sharp NOT but you can sharpen it. I have been using mine everyday since receiving it.
Well half love it half hate it.. Me I Freaking love it!!! Came in one piece and very sturdy I plan to take it everywhere I already sharpened the tip of it
YOU DON'T BUY THIS CANE TO CHOP TREES AND SHRUBS AND OTHER STUPID THINGS,, YOU BUY IT TO PROTECT YOU AGAINST HUMANS,,THATS THE WHOLE IDEA , THE CANE IS REALLY NICE AND IT DIDN'T FALL APART IN THE BOX OR ANY OTHER TIME., FOR THE PRICE,, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG DON'T ABUSE IT AND IT WON'T FALL APART. JOE FROM L.V
This is a good cane but it was initially difficult to get the sword out of the lower part of the cane. Apparently the inside of the cane had rusted a little making it difficult to get the sword out. The sword needs quit a bit of sharpening but it should work out just fine.
Overall for twenty bucks (10 on bogo sale) it is good! Metal construction Feels sturdy. Ok wood pommel/handle knob was off at delivery just used epoxy putty on it. It won't come Off again. Blade was squared- dulled. I used a sharpener and was able to put a blade on it. Sword is thin like a rapier- Similar to other sword canes. The sword seems sturdy. This is a great buy for the money!!! And yes I do believe it Could be used as self defense. I always wanted a sword cane like this but they were too expensive but not anymore- thanks to Bud K!!
I was surprised to find that the cane is steel. This is a good thing, increasing its use as a defensive weapon. The sword is a good length. It had a sharp tip but a dull blade. The blade rattled in the cane which is often the case with sword canes but this is easily remedied with a couple of tufts of wool. A nice value.
It is a good cane to use. One of the quietest I own but the blade is a little dull but thats what a grindstones for. The blade is a bit wobbly but that can be fixed.
Received 2, but will be returning 1 (for replacement) because of quality issues. The shaft is metal and the blade makes quite a bit of rattle when sheathed. I fixed this by filling the shaft with a styrofoam plug. The whole cane now feels sturdier and no more blade rattle. The blades were shipped duller than my high school Algebra teacher. I will have to sharpen it to razor sharpness (no biggy). Overall, this was a good purchase for $10.00 (Bogo sale). The blade is made for last ditch self defense, (not meant for rugged survival training, batoning, extended fencying sessions, or blade/spear throwing practice. It is what it is at a good price.
Recieved mine ASAP! Don't know about others, but MINE was razor sharp! Knob did indeed come out (after a couple of weeks) - fixed with some epoxy, not a big deal! Wrapped the blade with cord, now blade balances & handles very well, and sheath on mine is metal NOT plastic - makes a good off-hand foil/baton. Absolutely recommend!
I am very pleased with this cane. As someone said before, it is very sturdy and it looks fantastic all in black. A big plus!! Only downside is that it isn't very sharp out of the box. I plan 2 rememy that ASAP. Planning on another one.
Totally satified with this walking cane, good item with a fair price and good delivery time. Strong saft and handle with proper size blade, may but another one. Unlike the crappy tomahawks I bought last year. This item brought me back.
For $20 bucks it is a fairly solid piece of kit, but not nearly perfect. Straight out of the box, the wooden ball on the handle fell off. The blade rattles in the cane, and needs to be sharpened, but it does have a decent "heft" about it. As others have said, a few modifications and this could be an excellent cane.
Couple things to know about this before buying; Shipping: I live in Canada, the item took 2 months to reach me, about one month of that time it was simply "Processing". Seemed a little bit extensive but it did get here. As a cane; Not good. I've had it for about 6 days now, and the round top has already come off. Its attached to the rest of the cane by a small piece of wood with glue on the inside. Just being used as a cane, and being picked up and walked around with holding onto that part it has fallen off. As a functional cane then; would not recommend. As far as the blade goes; The blade is excellent quality, hand made, and feels very sturdy and reliable. It fits well into the rest of the cane, and is well-balanced as well. Overall verdict; Useful for things like cosplay, and maybe one or two excursions, but the pommel falling off so quickly was disappointing. I would send it back but if its going to take about half a year to get back to them and back to me its not really worth it. Overall decent buy though, especially for the price. 3 Stars.
I got this cane and I must say that I'm not disappointed nor impressed in what I received. With a little work this could be a nice low cost cane. As others have said the knob was coming off, which is a good thing, I found rust inside the handle and also in the shaft. The blade is nicely made, shaped like a katana blade but smaller scale. The cutting edge of the blade just doesn't exist on mine. I have seen sheet metal from metal shops that's as sharp. So if you don't have a sharpener with the tungsten carbide plates you'll want to get one. The shaft of the cane reminds me of a metal table leg the way it is tapered, and the blade rattles badly when inside. I plan on keeping this and giving it the upgrades it needs to be the nice thing it has the potential to be.
First cane came damaged but service to get it replaced was excellent.Good $20.00 cane sword. Wasn't expecting much but a good value for the money.
Not bad for $10 on sale, but the ball on the handle didn't fit. The rest is rather sturdy though, but the blade is a bit wobbly.
Now...for 20 bucks...the Cane Sword is very well made and all that you could expect for the money, maybe more. BUT...the blade is so dull I am not sure it would cut butter. While I can totally understand it not being razor sharp like my Hibben and other more expensive items...I do expect it to have an edge that will cut. It does seem to be solidly made, but it is going to take forever to get an actual edge on the blade. It is so dull you can run your finger down the entire blade and never break the skin. Quality...as I said...for the 20 buck price is great...just need lots of work to cut anything. I am saying I would recommend it to a friend...with the understanding they will have to work to sharpen it.
Poor quality, just as stated by others, same problems as the others before. In addition, they've now gone so far as to that is isn't even a push button release, you "twist it" to pull out the blade. It's more then clear to me that this "Black Traveler" AKA "SuperBat" line is simply a way to offload the defective $99-$130 movie prop cane. If you know what you're getting into, you'll love it, enjoy, but please don't think you're getting a low cost alternative to said movie prop replica.
My cane came in pieces but I used super glue and it's still working. The sheath is tight so a little sanding was needed, not to mention WD-40 helped. Over all it's OK but nothing to write home about. You get what you pay for.
this is an okay sword cane but don't use it for cutting because the blade is dull and the blade gets loose from swinging it around and also the ball part fell off from a day of owning it
After a week of anticipation, the box looked as if it were tossed around more as an inconvenience rather than an important parcel. Nevertheless it arrived, box near to torn apart but contents intact. Having said that, the sword cane was not at all I expected to be!!! The blade is flimsy at best and as dull as it could possibly be. I was hoping for a true firm blade. It's extremely difficult to remove "sword" from the sheath portion of the cane. Truly a disappointment. Expected better from you guys and this will certainly affect my next buying experience. I think I wanna cry.......
I got two BOGO. Both handles fell off in transit! I reglued them. Then I pulled a muscle in my arm trying to get them loose from the scabbard! When I finally got them out and found how dull they were,I could not get them back in. Not the quality of other products from BK
Ordered two in a BOGO sale. Both handles had fallen of in transit. Had to reglue them. Scabbard was a two hour refit job with a dremmel tool per cane to make it removable from scabbard. Had to foam the scabbard to keep the rattle down. Blades were totally dull and needed 30 minutes each to make sharp. If your time is valuable buy something else, but if you want to use the components and build a sword cane or two wait for a BOGO sale and be prepaired to invest a lot of time & sweat to make it work.
Very difficult to take apart. I have to find a grinder to make shaft smaller in diameter.
as some here noted, this item is incredibly dull(pretty much everything I've bought from budk is dull as dishwater, only 1 item was sharp enough to use out of the box). took several (about 5-8) passes w/ a bench grinder to get it to the point where I could sharpen it with a sharpening tool! also, arrived w/ the sword rusted in place. the push buttons are pretty useless so I simply cut the shaft off below so they don't show. also as noted by others, the rattle inside, so as another tried, I simply pushed packing foam down the shaft. fairly quiet now.
To flimsy. Came already bent. One of the swords didn't fit properly inside one of the cane shaft. To dull. To dull. To dull.
Just a really crap product, won't stay locked, can't adjust the button, head(pommel) fell off. Blade rattles in the shaft and is very soft. Bought 2 for an event and priced at $20, could give them away. Also bought the real bamboo cane at $30, it doesn't even pass for fake bamboo! priced at the $30 I paid also couldn't sell it. NO MORE junk! Cost more to send back than worth it. Don't believe ANY AD HYPE!!
First, the only wooden part is the pommel, which fell off in transit apparently. The pommel fits into the hilt very loosely; I had to manufacture a spacer to ensure the hilt fit snuggly and then epoxy it all back together. Very disappointed in this product.
Cane is glued together mix of wood aluminum and steel. The blade came bent one inch to the right and with a false edge. The blue is pinned into wood that's glued into the handle.the blade wobbles at this contact this contact point. The shift is metal so the blade rattles if moved. Don't believe the good reviews. The other knives I'd gotten from Bud-K are good deals, but this was a bust.
First time I used it the handle came off. There is now way to reattach the handle. Don't waste your money unless you just want something to look at' Have bought about 30 items from BUD K and this is the first that was bad. Also forget about finding a box to mail it back due to it's length.
received it on 3-19-14 not happy with it. I think it was a waste of $28.00 advertised as being razor sharp, but I have butter knives that are sharper. do not think I will buy anything else from this company. THANKS FOR NOTHING !!!
Shaft is bent and plastic "ball" on top fell out of the box and rolled across the floor. The glue looks like it just let go a long time ago. Not Pleased at all and will not shop here again. After ten years of being a happy customer, this broke my heart.
Not sharp ball end came off in shipment did not come UPS even when you do get it sharp one wack at a card board box and its dull again it will stab you very eazy getting it into action fast NO WAY hard as heck to get apart but for 20 buck you get what you pay fore won't do it again save your money and get a cold steel
bought this when it was buy one get one free, and the handle was broken right out of the box. the blade is terribly dull. it would take a grinder to get it even close to sharp. don't buy this or you will be just as disappointed as I was.
Every description in the video is false. No polypropaline; no "intricate detailing"; no unscrewing. The wood ball head fell off in shipping--it is just lightly glued on and has NO strength. The shaft is tapered aluminum. The handle is aluminum. The sword is held into the shaft by a ball-detent, not threads, but needs much sanding to fit back into the shaft---it is too big to fit. The "tang" of the sword is THREE-QUARTERS-OF-AN-INCH LONG and ends at the ball-detent, so that if you swing the sword and hit something---or lean on the cane very hard---the tang will tear out of the aluminum handle. BK has known this is junk but they keep lying about it year after year...................elsullo
Ok I knew this was not going to be top of the line, but thought it might be the quality of other things I have got from BK. Got it on the BOGO sale and can see why...the top never did fit right and fell off during shipping, I had to take them both out to my shop and put them in a vise to get them apart and then found the blades rusted the keeper pins rusted shut.... but hey I now know how to build a better one myself. Don't waste your money
its I good cane but the sword bends when I use it.it bent when I stabbed a wood box so it's not battle ready and u can't use it in a situation but if your looking for a cool cane with a blade it's the one you should get
I have bought several items from Budk and love them all. Unfortunately this cane missed the mark. With in two weeks of use the handle broke and the wood knob feel off. I guess you get what you pay for it was only $20. I will still order items from Budk they have the best prices and service.
