I was trained on such a compass to do land-nav with a map, protractor and string. The light retaining capabilities far exceed anything I used then. It accuracy is pin point and it doesn't require batteries. It may be "old school" but I feel better knowing I have it packed in my equipment vest when in the wilderness.
