Carbon steel is harder than stainless steel; less likely to crack. I am very pleased with the look, sharpness of the blade, and balance of this knife. And at a steal of a price!
I actually prefer the flat point Tantos such as Cold Steel usually produces, but this one is certainly a worthy alternative and it keeps me from having to purchase the much more simular but very expensive custom hand-made Tantos out there. Yes, it may require a little more care to fight back rust but that is the price we pay for quality. Forget the Vaseline suggestion, use Chogi Oil instead.
Damascus/carbon steel blades are easier to sharpen compared to Stainless steel. but they rust due to high carbon content. So advice of wiping oil off blade as you suggest is detrimental to Damascus! It will rust proto...Hence modern predominance of Stainless steel. I suggest a dose of petroleum jelly. A little goes a long way but your high carbon Damascus will thank you for it! that way you wont pull a rusted solid piece of junk out of the scabbard in a day or two!
