I was a little surprised in the wood. Not sure what it is but it seems like pine. There were some spots where I almost got a splinter. I was also taken back by the release button. Why silver? stick out like a sore thumb. Also the button is not flush. The blade seems good but out of the box better use to open letters. I'm sure I could get it sharpened. Take a good look at the picture because the button part of the cane is tapered and not to impressed with the tip. Wish they put one in that made it more plausible for walking in the wooks or any soft ground. For $140.00 I would have purchased a more solid cane than this one. Do like the style.

The sword cane matched up with its description. It is of superior quality and well made. I am recovering from a spine surgery that fused my spine from the pelvis to the shoulder blades. I find the Hibben cane to function perfectly for my support when I am walking, as I have still some unstablity in walking. I would recommend this cane to anyone that needs support and security.

As a cane for support this piece looks great and has real nice balance. It's well made - as a cane for support - and the handle feels quite comfortable. If I were rating this as just a walking stick I would give it five stars. As a "sword", the blade isn't long or broad enough to be what I would call a true sword. You really don't get enough reach. There is distal taper from tip of blade to base of 1/16" to 1/8". The blade is 5/8" wide where it meets the handle. The tip is 1/4" across just below the angle of the tanto point. All things considered, the blade is more like a sharpened file. It comes sword sharp (dull sharp), not knife (razor) sharp. I like that the "sword" does not rattle when you walk with the cane. The blade release works smoothly and is secure. You can deploy the shiv rapidly. It will do for quick slashes and stabbing, but I wouldn't count on it to deflect a heavy weapon. At close quarters someone with a knife is going to be faster. I would not recommend chopping branches of pencil thickness or hacking through too many corrugated boxes with this weapon. Forget using it as a pry bar. Perhaps the most reassuring part of this self defense package is the handle which is a rock solid hammer.
